A pig trial has proven more effective against the Covid-19 AstraZeneca vaccine when taking two doses, according to research published by the British Berberite Institute on Tuesday.
Research has shown that giving an initial primary dose and then a booster dose of the vaccine produced a stronger immune response than a single dose. This indicates that the two-dose method may be more effective in obtaining protection from Covid-19 disease caused by the emerging corona virus.
"The researchers detected a marked increase in antibodies that communicate with the virus in a manner that prevents infection," the Berbright Institute team said in a statement. They added that the level of immune response that would be required to protect humans was not yet known.
"These results seem to encourage that two doses ... enhance the response of antibodies that can neutralize the virus, but what is important is the response in humans," said Brian Charlestown, director of the Berbright Institute.
The vaccine is already being tested in humans, and AstraZeneca says it hopes to obtain efficacy data later this year.
